Box cricket

Matches are usually 6 to 8 a side in a netted cage, played with a heavy tennis ball. House rules differ — ask whether a hit into the roof net is out or a dot ball, and how many overs fit your slot.

Wear flat turf shoes or rubber studs. Metal spikes aren't allowed on synthetic turf.

Badminton

Check the floor before you book: a synthetic mat plays very differently from bare wood or cement. Most indoor courts insist on non-marking shoes.

Ask whether shuttles and racquets are included or charged by the hour.
